About Me

I am Associate Professor in the Statistics, Measurement, and Evaluation in Education (SMEE) program in the Department of Educational, School and Counseling Psychology at the University of Missouri. My research interests include statistical modeling and psychometrics, particularly their applications to large-scale complex assessment data, as well as scale development. I have extensive experiences in research design and applied statistical analyses. Techniques used in my published research include a priori and post hoc power analyses, factor analysis, measurement invariance over time and across groups, second-order piecewise latent growth modeling, multilevel modeling, latent covariate modeling, bifactor modeling, exploratory structural equation modeling, generalizability theory, item response theory, classical test theory, and propensity score matching, as well as regression, ANOVA, ANCOVA, MANOVA, MANCOVA, DFA, and randomization. I have applied statistical techniques to large-scale assessments such as TIMSS, PIRLS and NELS:88 and state assessment data. My research combines substantive theories (e.g., expectancy-value theory, self-determination theory, social comparison theory) and state-of-the-art quantitative methodologies.

Classroom Engagement Inventory

In 2010, my colleagues Christi Bergin and David Bergin, and I began to develop the Classroom Engagement Inventory (CEI). We collected data from more than 3,000 students in 4th to 12th grades in a school district in Missouri in 2010 and then again in 2011. Based on latent variable modeling and psychometrics analysis results, the final 24-item CEI has 5 dimensions: (1) Affective Engagement, (2) Behavioral Engagement - Compliance, (3) Behavioral Engagement - Effortful Class Participation, (4) Cognitive Engagement, and (5) Disengagement.
