Robin E. Best joined the department in 2010. She received her Ph.D. from Binghamton University (SUNY) in 2007 and specializes in comparative politics. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Missouri she was an assistant professor of political science at Leiden University (the Netherlands) and an instructor of political science at Syracuse University.
Her research focuses on political parties, party system size, electoral politics, and democratic representation. She is broadly interested in how political parties and electoral systems translate citizen preferences into democratic representation.
Her current research is motivated by the increases in party system fragmentation and support for minor or new political parties in advanced industrialized democracies. Her research aims to shed light on these phenomena by exploring changes in the relationships between political parties, electoral institutions, party policy positions, and citizen preferences.
